Rust Removal — Stucco, Concrete & Pavers

The Stains Pressure Can't Lift

If your driveway, walkway, paver patio, or stucco wall has orange streaks or rust-colored splotches, it's almost certainly irrigation rust — iron from your well-fed sprinkler system bonded chemically to the surface. South Florida is full of it. Wells are the dominant irrigation source across most of Palm Beach and Broward counties, and well water carries dissolved iron. When that water sprays onto concrete, stucco, or pavers, the iron oxidizes in contact with air and bonds at the molecular level with the calcium and limestone in the surface.

This is why standard pressure washing doesn't help. There's no surface dirt to blast off — the iron is part of the surface now. The fix is chemical: a properly applied oxalic-based reducer that converts the iron oxide back to a soluble form, which can then be rinsed away. Done right, the stains come out cleanly. Done wrong, you'll either fail to lift the rust completely or you'll damage the surface trying.

Why Standard Cleaning Fails

Several types of pros will try to remove rust with bleach, with stronger pressure, or with generic acid cleaners. None of these work reliably. Bleach actually sets the stain by oxidizing the iron further. Higher pressure damages the surface without lifting the iron. Generic acid cleaners are either too weak to do anything or strong enough to etch the surface beyond the staining. The right approach is a properly diluted oxalic-based reducer applied to the rust, dwelled long enough to convert the iron, and rinsed cleanly. That's the chemistry, and that's what we use.

Our Rust Removal Process

We start by identifying the rust zones, the sources (which sprinkler heads are causing it), and the surrounding plants and surfaces that need protection. Pre-rinse comes next: all landscaping in the runoff path gets saturated with clean water, and we set up containment for any rust treatment that's running near plants. We mix the reducer to the right concentration for the specific surface — concrete tolerates higher concentrations than stucco; stucco tolerates higher than soft pavers.

Application happens in controlled sections. The reducer gets brushed or sprayed onto the rust, dwells for the appropriate time (depending on stain depth), and is rinsed away with clean water at low pressure. For deep stains we sometimes need a second application. We always finish with a clean-water flush of the surrounding plants and a thorough rinse of the treated surface so no residual chemistry remains. Final step is documenting the result with before-and-after video.

Long-Term Prevention

Rust will return if the underlying irrigation issue isn't fixed. Most homeowners address it one of two ways. The simpler is redirecting sprinkler heads so they don't hit the stained surfaces — we'll point out which heads are causing the problem during the cleaning. The more complete fix is installing an iron filter on the irrigation line, which removes dissolved iron before it ever sprays onto your property. We can recommend trusted irrigation contractors for either. Most of our rust removal clients address the source within a few weeks of the cleaning to break the cycle.
